Really like this grinder-only a couple design issues...

The grinder does a great job, it has an even accurate grind and it automatically metes out the appropriate amount of grounds. The two issues which, in my opinion, don't overshadow it's positive points; the bin for the beans could have been larger but this is a minor thing, the larger issue is the tight fitting wonky receptical for the ground coffee; it's messy and clunky. It (the receptical) has a very tight fitting lid that is square. This makes it unwieldy to open and close. The container makes a bit of a mess when you take it off the grinder and it is also messy as you pour the coffee grinds into the filter. I think that Melitta could make a few changes on their next iteration.

I had been using a Krups burr grinder that broke after a year. This new grinder in easier to set and much faster. The grind is very uniform and I so far am very pleased

Melitta 80395 Burr Coffee Grinder

The Melitta 80395 Burr Coffee Grinder is a reasonable value for the money but it has a few problems that potential buyers should be aware of before purchasing.

- The bean hopper does not hold 16.5 ounces of coffee beans. It is even printed on the outside of the box but it is simply not true. The bean hopper holds around 6.5 ounces of roasted coffee beans or about the amount you end up with when you roast 8 ounces of green coffee. Looks like an overzealous copy editor added a 1 to the volume measurement somewhere along the way but this is actually a minor complaint.

- The grind of the coffee at the various grind settings is fairly uniform and it does offer quite a range of potential grinds. Unfortunately, the grind selector dial will move to a slightly coarser setting as the grinder operates when you have it set on the lowest (finest) setting. Not really a problem unless you want to grind very fine coffee.

- Larger coffee beans do not feed evenly from the bean hopper into the grinding chamber. Average size and smaller beans feed fine but you will need to shake the grinder while it operates for larger beans to continuously feed. The problem appears to be the diameter of the throat of the grinding chamber and larger beans will create a bean jam while they are feeding. Shaking the grinder clears the jam but this is a nuisance. I was surprised at how similar the grinding chamber design is on the Melitta 80395 is to the design of my 30+ year old Waring 11CG12 Burr Coffee Grinder. That grinder has served me well but it will no longer produce fine grinds because of wear on the burrs. I hope the Melitta will last as long since it is a similar design.

- The cup selector dial seems to be a timer that cuts the grinder off after a fixed amount of time depending on the dial setting. If the beans feed properly into the grinding chamber, the grinder is fairly consistent in the amount of coffee it grinds but you will need to measure out the amount of ground coffee to get a feel for what setting you should use. Just look at the numbers on the dial as an arbitrary scale. They do not have much relationship to cups of coffee anyway since brew strength is fairly subjective and somewhat dependent on roast. Having the timer switch to hit for grinding a fixed amount of coffee is nice once you get comfortable with how it works.

- The hopper that catches the ground coffee seals well and you do not get much grounds spillage around the grinder but the way it is designed makes dumping the coffee out of the hopper a little messy. Seems like the designers could have done a better job with the hopper design.

- The Melitta 80395 is fairly noisy when it operates but since you only run it for a short period of time this is not a major complaint. My Waring makes a similar amount of noise. Suspect it is the nature of the beast for counter top coffee grinders.

Overall, I am satisfied with the Melitta 80395. It is a good value for the money but it is not perfect, hence the 4 star rating.
